Suggestions for a successful classified ad
- Say exactly what you want to say – make your headline perfectly clear in just a few words.
- Think of yourself as the reader. What would you want to know about the item?
- Describe the item fully – you’ve got lots of room. Explain its special features, or how it’s different from other similar items. Be sure that your description is accurate - please don't exaggerate or be misleading. In the long run, it's not good for anyone.
- Avoid abbreviations or insider terms that other folks (who perhaps speak a different language) may not understand. Again, you’ve got plenty of room.
- Include the price of the item, or what you would take in trade. If you’re flexible on the price mention that, too.
- Pictures! By all means, include pictures of your item – after all, they’re free, and nothing sells better than good, clear shots of your item.
- Since the web is a global medium, your ad will be viewed by people everywhere. If you don't want to ship outside your country please note this in your ad.
We encourage all old car guys to keep an open mind and to be willing to deal with folks throughout the free world.
Completing the sale safely
As a seller or a buyer, you need to protect yourself from bad apples:
Use our email system
Dog Rump Creek Classifieds has a built in email system so that you can communicate back and forth by email without revealing your identity or exposing your email address until you’ve made the deal.
Ask for contact information
Once you have agreed on a price and you’re ready to buy or sell, make sure you ask for an address and telephone number. Calling them back is a way to verify that they are legitimate.
Honest buyers or sellers will usually provide this information. Use common sense.
Be very careful with buyers from Eastern Europe or West Africa as there are many scams coming from these countries.
Use a safer payment system
Once you have made the deal, use a service with fraud protection such as PayPal. If you're buying from a merchant, use a credit card or a service like PayPal.
Never use wire transfer uses such as MoneyGram or Western Union when dealing with people you don’t know personally. Never send cash.
Caveat emptor – Buyer beware!
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
